The Cost of Gabapentin Without Insurance

Individuals who suffer from nerve pain or focal aware seizures may be prescribed the anticonvulsant medication gabapentin, which is the generic for Neurontin. Gabapentin will not cure focal aware seizures (also called partial seizures), but it can help to prevent seizures. Gabapentin may also help reduce nerve pain that remains after suffering from shingles.

Ask About Generic Options

Generic medications are just as effective as their brand counterparts and are often much less expensive. Chat with your health care provider to see if you can switch to a generic option if you are prescribed a brand version of your medication.

If you are currently prescribed a brand name version of your prescription, ask your health care provider about switching to the generic option. The cost of gabapentin varies in price by pharmacy and location.

What is gabapentin?

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication that is also used as a neuropathic pain treatment. It is taken orally and is available in liquid, capsule, and tablet form. It is available as an immediate-release medication or an extended-release medication.

In some states, gabapentin has been labeled as a controlled substance under federal regulations. Visit here for more information on controlled substances and scheduling. It's important to consult with your health care provider when starting or changing your prescription medication, and discussing your health history with prescriptions.

What conditions does gabapentin treat?

Gabapentin is used in conjunction with other medications to treat focal aware seizures in children and adults. It is also used to treat lingering nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia, which can result after suffering from shingles.

Common Symptoms of Focal Aware Seizures

Unusual electrical activity that affects a small area of the brain is called a focal aware, or partial seizure. Symptoms of partial or focal aware seizures include:

  • Blank stares
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle tightening
  • Unusual movement of the head
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Dilated pupils
  • Vision changes
  • Flushed face
  • Pain
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Mood changes
  • Inability to speak

Common Symptoms of Shingles

Only those individuals who have had chickenpox can get shingles. This is because shingles are caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After the initial infection with chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus remains dormant in nerve tissues close to your brain and spinal cord. If the virus reactivates, shingles will result.

Symptoms of shingles include a painful rash that appears on the skin. It often first shows up as a line, or stripe of blisters on one side of your torso, but may appear on your face or neck. The rash is not life-threatening, but it can be incredibly painful, and lead to lasting nerve pain. Other signs or symptoms of shingles include:

  • Itching on one side of your body
  • Pain or burning on one side of your body
  • Numbness or tingling on one side of your body
  • Blisters filled with fluid on one side of your body
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light

Lingering pain, known as postherpetic neuralgia may persist long after the blisters and rash of shingles have passed. This pain is the result of damaged nerve fibers that send exaggerated pain signals to the brain, from the skin.

Because those most at risk for shingles are over the age of 50, a shingles vaccine is recommended beginning at age 50. Shingrix is an FDA-approved vaccine for shingles, and RxSaver coupons for Shingix may help you save money on this important immunization.

The RxSaver price for Shingrix at major retail pharmacies starts at $171.73

How does gabapentin work?

According to the Epilepsy Foundation, gabapentin was specifically designed to be similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. To date, however, scientists aren’t entirely clear about how gabapentin works. Studies show that it binds to the alpha2-delta site through calcium channels, which is believed to be the way that its anticonvulsant mechanisms function. As an anticonvulsant, gabapentin is frequently taken in conjunction with other medications, as prescribed by health care providers.

As a nerve-pain agent, gabapentin appears to reduce the increase in pain sensitivity that occurs following infection with the varicella-zoster virus which causes shingles.

Common Side Effects of Gabapentin

Gabapentin has the potential to cause minor or severe side effects in adults and children. Common side effects of gabapentin may include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Aggressiveness or hostility
  • Viral infection
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Clumsiness

Serious, potentially dangerous but rare side effects have been reported. Contact your health care provider immediately if you notice any of the following:

If you are suffering from side effects, a reduction in dosage may resolve the issue. However, patients taking gabapentin should not abruptly stop taking the medication before speaking to your health care provider.

Can you buy gabapentin over the counter?

Gabapentin is not sold as an over the counter medication. You will need a prescription for gabapentin from your health care provider and will need to fill the prescription at a pharmacy.
